  • Surprise visitor

    Tue 11 Jul 2023

After the children left yesterday afternoon, a baby grass snake popped in to my office to say "Hello". Mrs R carefully caught it and put it back outside.

  • SEND Coffee Morning

    Fri 07 Jul 2023

We held another successful SEND coffee morning this week. Thank you to parents who attended and for sharing your experiences and positive strategies that you use at home.

Sally Balderstone from Autism Outreach was our guest on this occasion. She talked to families about the service and how they support schools when a child has been referred. There was also an opportunity for parents to ask Sally questions and discuss their own circumstances.

Thank you Mrs Kerry and Mrs Dolman for organising these meetings.

  • KS2 Sports Day

    Fri 23 Jun 2023

On Friday 16th June, KS2 held their Sports Day! It was a fantastic morning with fantastic weather too! Children competed in a number of events: bean bag race, skipping, sack race, egg and spoon and the sprint.

  • Year 3 Perform with the Halle Orchestra!

Mon 19 Jun 2023 Mrs Dolman

On Friday, Year 3 had the incredible opportunity to perform alongside the Halle orchestra as part of an event led by Derbyshire Music Partnership. They have been working really hard all year with Mrs Salt to learn the flute and learn a number of songs to develop their musicality.

The event was alongside many other schools and it was fantastic to see so many young children playing instruments and enjoying classical music.

What a fantastic afternoon had by all (and lots of very excited staff!)

  • Leiden Residential 2023

Sat 10 Jun 2023 Mrs Dolman

On Wednesday, 16 of our Year 6 pupils had a once in a lifetime trip to Leiden, Holland with Mrs Dolman and Miss Key. We were also joined by children from Newton Primary School, Stonebroom Primary School and Westhouses Primary School.

We spent day 1 at 'The Deep' in Hull and got to take part in a sea-themed murder mystery activity as well as looking at all of the fascinating sea life. Then we boarded the ferry ready for the big journey! We all thoroughly enjoyed the buffet meal and were treated to a spontaneous foam party/disco and show in the evening! Everyone was exhausted and slept though the bumpy night!

On Thursday, we disembarked at Rotterdam port and headed into Leiden where we spent the day exploring the wonderful sights. We had a river cruise; walked around the shops and finished off with ice creams by the windmill. Then it was back on the ferry for another delicious meal, disco and two shows!

It was a very bumpy right on Thursday and there were a few queasy tummies!

Friday morning consisted of our final full English and a ride home.

Mrs Dolman and Miss Key couldn't be prouder of our children. They had exceptional manners (this was commented on by a number of passengers and staff), behaviour was excellent and it was an absolute pleasure seeing their happy faces.

  • Coronation Day

Fri 05 May 2023 Mrs Dolman

Today, we celebrated the coronation of King Charles. The children and staff came dressed in red, white and blue and made crowns to wear. The dinner staff were fantastic and put together a fantastic street party for all us to enjoy. The hall was decorated, balloons were everywhere and the picnic bags went down a treat. A huge thank you to our fantastic catering team and our talented midday supervisor team.

In the afternoon, the children took part in a range of coronation-themed activities. We then had a crown parade outside to show off our creations. Mrs Needham and Mrs Dolman judged the best crown and our winners recieved a personalised, commemorative medal to keep.

In assembly, we sang the national anthem and our coronation song proudly accompanied by our fantastic brass band!

What a fantastic day had by all!

  • Musical Club's Debut Performance!

Wed 03 May 2023 Mrs Dolman

On Saturday, Shirland Primary School's musical club took to the stage to perform 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat'. They performed to over 250 people over the two performances and were absolutely incredible! Thank you to everyone who came to support our fantastic cast and a huge thank you to the staff who have supported the club with either props, backstage help or costumes.

  • British Values - The Rule of Law

Mon 17 Apr 2023 School Council

Today we held an assembly on the 'Rule of Law'. We were lucky enough to have a real life lawyer come in to talk to us all about why the Rule of Law is important and why we need the law in society.

There were some great questions, such as "What happens if you tell a lie in Court?", and our speaker explained how everyone is treated equally by the law, no matter what, and that the law is there to protect us and keep us safe. We also spent some time discussing the law as a career path, and how many people help us maintain the integrity of the Rule of Law.

  • Autism Awareness Day

Fri 31 Mar 2023 Mrs Dolman

Today, the school took part in 'Autism Awareness Day'. The children and staff wore blue to represent calm and acceptance. Mrs Dolman led an assembly to talk about what autism is; what difficulties this can present for the child or adult and how we can help in school. We then went to do some activities in our classrooms to deepen our understanding.
