Design and Technology

We have been building structures as a design and technology project linked to our ‘Ancient Maya’ topic. We had a team competition to build an Ancient Maya Temple, with prizes for the most realistic model and the best teamwork. Here are our winners!

Best Model

These children worked really carefully on their model. They drew out a good design and made annotations to help them when they started building. They have really looked at the shape of the real temple, and have worked hard to arrange their boxes and cut parts down to form it accurately. They have included details like the cenotes and the special steps, and have made a very accurate pyramid for the top. Their model looks great! They were also in the running for the teamwork prize as we realized that good teamwork also gives great results!

Best teamwork

These children worked so well as a team. They came across a few problems while they were building their model but talked them through and helped each other to solve them. Every time I looked they were working sensibly, with every single member of the team doing a job. One person joined the team late and everyone both welcomed her and listened to her ideas, and she got stuck in straight away. Because of their great teamwork, they produced a super model!

In English we have just begun a story called ‘The Chocolate Tree’ by Linda Lowery and Richard Keep (available on audible or through DCC library). It is a Mayan folktale, which tells the story of where chocolate came from. We had a fantastic morning enjoying our first read of the book. We looked at pictures that illustrated new and tricky vocabulary, drank hot chocolate, and worked in teams to create pictures of the settings to inspire our writing.
