Children in EYFS love stories! The best start for children's reading is to listen to lots of stories. Try sharing lots of simple ones where they can join in with the phrases they know. Traditional stories such as the Gingerbread Man are great for this age group! Help them understand the stories by asking them questions, discussing the character's feelings, looking at the pictures and asking them to retell it. When children start bringing their phonics matched books home, encourage them to read regularly, and keep talking about the stories to help them develop all the skills they need for a successful journey through school.
