  • Shirland Chicks

    Mon 06 Jul 2020

For the second year running, the bird box near Class SF is host to a clutch of young birds. Unlike the previous year, which saw a family of Bluetits, this year's residents are a family of House Sparrows.

At the end of July, the chicks were featherless and blind. In the first photo, a parent can be seen feeding some very hungry chicks. A week later, their eyes are open, they have a covering of soft feathers and they are looking more like their parents. Ten days later, the chicks are more mobile, clambering to get to the hole in the birdbox when a parent comes to feed them.
